Eland Cape
The common eland (Taurotragus oryx, also known as the southern eland) is a savannah and plains antelope found in East and Southern Africa. The common eland stands around 1.7m (6ft) at the shoulder and weighs upto and above 900kg (1980lbs). Females are sometimes slightly more than half the weight of adult males, depending on the area. They are the world's largest antelopes, together with giant eland which are ironically about the same size. Both sexes have horns, about 65cm (2ft) long and with a steady spiral ridge (resembling that of the bushbuck). The female's horns are wider set and thinner than the male's. Despite the weight of the Eland they can leap 2m with ease.
