Oryx Gemsbok
The gemsbok or gemsbuck (Oryx gazella) is a large African antelope, of the Oryx genus. The name is derived from the Dutch name for the male chamois, Gemsbok. Although there are some superficial similarities in appearance (especially in the colour of the face area), the chamois and the oryx are not related.
They stand 1.2m (4ft) at the shoulder and can weigh up to 240kg (530lbs) with both sexes having a powerfull build, a deep chest and solid neck and shoulders. The Oryx has a sandy coloured coat and a superb black and white markings on the face and ears and black markings on the neck, spinet, rear and tail.
Gemsbok are hunted by lions and spotted hyenas (as well as man) but are able to kill or injure their predators with their long rapier like horns. They can go long periods without waters and are well adapted to the harsh environment.
